The SDPI recommends exercising caution when using the DeepSeek app

The State Data Protection Inspectorate (VDAI) is closely monitoring the situation regarding the personal data collected by the DeepSeek application and its compliance with the rules of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), urging everyone to remain vigilant and carefully consider before entering sensitive personal or third-party data into this app.

The SDPI, aiming to ensure a coordinated approach to the situation related to the DeepSeek application, is collaborating with data protection authorities of other European countries. The situation regarding DeepSeek will also be discussed at the European Data Protection Board's plenary session on February 11.

According to DeepSeek's privacy policy, the application collects user-entered text, uploaded files, chat history, and other content. It also appears that the information provided by users is further used to improve its services.

Since the information about the processing of personal data is not sufficiently transparent, and personal data may become accessible to third-country institutions (data may be stored on servers located in China), we urge residents not to use this application or to carefully consider before entering sensitive personal data of themselves or others.

The SDPI emphasises that organisations not established in the European Union but offering services to its residents and processing residents' personal data must comply with the GDPR rules. The situation regarding the personal data collected by the DeepSeek application and its compliance with GDPR rules is currently not entirely clear. We will provide additional information on the decisions adopted at the European Data Protection Board's plenary session.ChatDBT photo
